How Search Engine Optimization (SEO) a Website
This article is a follow up my last entry on SEO search (or SEO), which can be found here on Articlesbase = "href online-promotion-articles/an-introduction-to-search-engine-optimization-728999.html" target = "_blank">. While the first article provided a broad overview of what SEO is and how it can help promote your business, this is intended to provide A more detailed description of how the process works and some of the tasks to be undertaken to optimize a site. My intended audience for this article are web design companies and marketing firms looking to enter the world of SEO, but need a manual to help you get started.
Getting Started
A key fact to take into account the whole entire optimization process, and we can say this: The search engines have one goal and that is to return more results relevant to any given query. SEO is essentially the process of ensuring that search engines understand your site or your client's site, in fact, a good good match for certain queries. For example, if you or your client owns a coffee shop in Philadelphia, then your website is quite a good match for "consultation cafes Philadelphia." However, the search engine algorithms can not determine the relevance of a particular page on your own if the site is well optimized. Let's look at the key steps involved in optimizing a site, allowing search engines to perform, "Oh! This is a very relevant to the query gave me."
Choose your keywords and phrases Primary
Choose the primary keywords and phrases to be optimization is one of most important parts of SEO. You need to find what I call a "midplane" keyword – something that is so broad that it is useless to optimize, but not so specific that no one is looking for her.
Consider a client who asks you to optimize the expression "immovable property". With very few exceptions, this is a perfect example of a keyword that is too broad to be useful. Anyone searching for "real estate" will immediately realize that they need to refine their search beyond a very broad term. It is immediately clear that the optimization for a term so broad it is almost always a futile effort. Not only because the process optimization itself be exceedingly difficult, but because more than likely, the traffic generated would not lead to sales ( "conversion").
Now, Let's assume that your client is ABC real estate in Bala Cynwd, PA, and are real estate agents specializing in residential market Philadelphia. I can do to optimize the "ABC Real Estate Cynwd Bala. This is an example of a keyword that is incredibly easy to optimize for (probably even called "optimization" since there is only one ABC Real Estate in Bala Cynwd, almost guaranteeing you the # 1 result), but this word is almost useless for driving new traffic to the site. Users looking for the name of the company already knows about the business and probably knows what the company does. Want to drive traffic from people who are looking for a product or service offered by the company, even when the potential customer does not know about the company yet.
"Homes for sale in Philadelphia" is a key word to think in this case. We know that this consultation that the person doing the search are looking for homes for sale in Philadelphia. Our client is willing to provide not only the ability to search the home, but the real estate agents are willing to assist the investigator in his search for a new home. This is the kind of traffic to proceed to the scene. 2.3 You should choose keyword phrases similar to serve the main search goals. Site Structure
The first thing to watch when the task of optimizing a site is the structure of the site itself – the HTML, the URL / link structure, and the title and meta tags. If the site does not exist yet, but should be optimized Once built, this section applies still too, so read on.
Navigation
One of common problems to do with poorly optimized sites is a navigation system that is effectively invisible to search engines. Often the main navigation was created with JavaScript or Flash, and no alternative site or links provided. While search engines like Google are getting much better at identifying links embedded in JavaScript and Flash, it is still a much better idea of providing a plain HTML / CSS-based navigation system. You can do this without sacrificing any of JavaScript or Flash functionality or change the user experience at all, so there's no reason not to. If navigation is based on JavaScript, make sure you are using a "pure CSS" menu system, which means you can encode your navigation, as if it were a normal
or menu based, but the script will transform these tags in power JavaScript dropdown menus. Some of the menu systems we use in the context are: Superfish, OpenCube, and smartMenu. If navigation is flash based, you can use a dynamic scripting the Flash (see swfobject) to replace transparency HTML-based navigation with the flash element. In both cases, the search engines will see the original HTML and CSS-based navigation elements, which are much easier to go and that its index of javascript or flash-based counterparts.
A note on flash based sites
If your site is done entirely in flash, you may want to rethink your design, using flash instead of a header, footer, and / or the borders, but leaving the main content as HTML and CSS. Otherwise, I recommend essentially the construction of two full versions of the site – one in HTML and one in Flash. As mentioned earlier, search engines are becoming more effective at indexing Flash pages, but they are still doing a disservice to yourself in terms SEO if your website is 100% flash based. Furthermore, fully flash driven sites can often degrade the user experience, but that's a topic for another article.
URL Structure
Now let's talk about the URLs. Search engines like very clean URLs, the kind you see in the top of this (or any other based on Wordpress) blog. Even if your site is driven by dynamic content, you need to rewrite your URLs to look like pages static. For example, instead of having / product-view.php? Fromcat = 5 & id = 32, will have a URL that looks more like / products/32/this-is-the-product-name.html. Not only is the actual URL that the search engines when looking at a page to determine what might be a point (which is why it includes the name of the product) are also indexed in much easier time static URL instead of complicated dynamic URLs with a number of variables at the end. There are many ways to perform the rewriting, and usually not very difficult. The easiest way is to use the Apache mod_rewrite module, that allows you to redirect a URL to another transparently, while the visitor only sees the original. If you are using ASP.net in IIS, there is an excellent rewrite module for IIS6 and IIS7 has built-in ability to re-write. Finally, development frameworks as a fuse to PHP or Ruby on Rails with extensive "routing" functionality that allows fine grained control over the structure of the URL.
Title and Meta Tags
The description and tags are very important in SEO. These labels are their first opportunity to explain to a search engine what your site is about, and you should follow some guidelines to generate these labels:
- The title and meta description should include keywords and phrases primary, but only once. Do not repeat "Cafeteria Philadelphia" five times on the label the title, because the search engines penalize your site for keyword stuffing.
- While no strict rules regarding the duration, the label the title should be 60-80 characters, the meta tag of around 200.
- The title and meta tags have to be different for each page. Even if the title or meta description tags for some pages do not constitute their primary search phrases (which do not have to) should be clear and relevant to each individual page.
Content
SEO is a common adage that "content is king" and although the process of SEO has come a little more complex in recent years, remains largely true.
Your site should contain the most useful, unique content as possible. Just snippets plastered throughout the site will not help much, but the best thing you can do to optimize a site is to provide content high quality that people actually want to see or read. The development of that content can be difficult, but here are some basic guidelines:
- Each page should have at least two paragraphs of relevant content. There are some exceptions here, because some pages simply do not require any text, but you should strive to work in the highest quality, relevant (remember: high quality and relevant) textual content as possible.
- Do not rely exclusively bulleted lists. Bulleted lists are fine and will not hurt his position, but must be extended by rich prose, as large tracts net text that most of the benefits in terms of SEO.
- Include targeted search keywords and phrases in the content, but not "things" by repeating keywords more times than is reasonable. It is a balancing act that takes place here, but as a rule, I try not to include the same keyword or phrase more than once every two paragraphs. There are many exceptions, however, which is something you must develop a special skill after some trial and error.
- Its home page is the holy grail of content on its site. Every single website only had a home page for what the content is not weighed heavily by search engines. Make sure the content of your homepage is a decent length (at least 2 points), contains the main keywords and phrases (with grace – to do things, not keywords), and is well written and relevant.
- Include both content in so many different pages as possible. Remember, though: high quality and relevant. Do not create pages for the sake of having more pages – Think about the information that will be relevant to your potential customers and provide through their website. For example, if you are optimizing for a coffee shop in Philadelphia, a page devoted to how to identify and choose the best coffee beans could be a great resource. Many times you will be surprised and unable to predict some of the keywords and phrases people to your site, but relevant "landing pages" to ensure that traffic can be collected well who were not necessarily expecting.
Building inbound links
Another essential piece of the puzzle of SEO is to get other sites link back to yours. There are several ways to do this, but also some pitfalls to avoid.
- The presentation of the repertoire – this is the process of simply adding your site to online directories that list and links to external sites. There are some important things to remember when submitting your site to directories, however:
- There are plenty of good free directories that do not require a reciprocal link. Do not get caught payable for each submission (although there are some directories that are worth paying).
- Make sure the directory itself is in good standing with Google. You want to check your Page Rank 1 / 10 (score Google the importance of a site). The easiest way to check the page rank is to install the Google Toolbar
- Make sure the directory of links to your site and not go first to a tracking page. If the link is not direct, is essentially useless.
- Try to find directories that allow you to specify the anchor text – the text that people click to get to your site. Make the anchor text of your primary keyword phrases, for example, the words "coffee Philadelphia" should link to philacoffeeshopsite.com.
- Distribution of press releases – Your customer should have the press releases that describe current events in the company. These should be placed as text (instead of or in addition to PDF), both on the website but also in global press release sites that allow you to submit your own press release. It should also include links directly to your website in the press release
- Social Networking & Web 2.0 – there are many sites that allow you to post your own business profile anywhere. Hotfrog informative articles and are good examples of such sites, and I recommend adding a listing is not for any site that you are optimizing. Moreover, if you are interested, relevant content to share with the public, consider posting it to the global sites such as Digg
Conclusion
Hopefully this article provided insight into the SEO process and can act as an "Introduction" primer for businesses looking to expand their service offerings.
