Search Engine Optimization: Elements of an SEO Strategy
Of all the areas of Internet Marketing, Search Engine Optimization is the most misunderstood, and potentially the most important to their marketing efforts. There are millions and millions of pages of web content that does not – you can work hard, build a great site, and then be completely lost in the shuffle. SEO is important. It is also a very complex process that requires patience, careful planning and a long-term approach.
If you beginning with:
… read on. This article should provide you with a high level review of the SEO process, dispel a few SEO myths, and help you understand the optimization strategies self.
What is Search Engine Optimization?
Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, defies definition easy. But here's a short version:
Search Engine Optimization
Using keyword analysis and other legitimate practices to obtain the highest possible search engine rankings and directory under a particular key phrase to a specific URL.
Every SEO professional in the world just shrugged, so I will break this definition a bit and hope to avoid a hail of angry e-mails:
Analysis Keyword is the process of data mining search keywords to find the best balance between the keywords you need and the best niche search capabilities. More on this later.
Search, an automated search engine. "Search Engines include Google, AlltheWeb.com, Yahoo (powered by Google in addition to its own directory information), AOL Search, Ask Jeeves and MSN Search. A search engine obtains its results for "spider" or "bots" – small programs that reach your site read in much the same way as you: When reading the contents of a page, and then move from page to page via links. A directory, on the other hand, is built at least in part by humans reading sites and other information and decide where each site is consistent with the directory structure. Zone of the Yahoo and Open Directory are examples of directories.
Ranking is the numerical rank that reflects its position in the results list when someone conducts a search on a particular set of keywords.
More Possible means to achieve high numbers close to one as possible. Sometimes you just can not get that number one. Maybe someone else has a 400-page site web exclusively dedicated to the keyphrase which you are trying to optimize. Or maybe they are paying a fortune on advertising. Such is life sometimes …
Key phrase is the key word or set of types of keywords for someone in search of something 'on the ground on Google or Alta Vista or any another search engine.
A URL is the address of a page on their site. Most search engines display the results search keywords and provide a direct link to the most relevant page for results, rather than your home page. It's very, very important to maintain this in mind when creating and optimizing your site.
Legitimate practices is one of the pet peeve of mine. A true search engine campaign optimization will not use such practices as cover page or content, redirects, or lists of links (called "link farms '), But is based on good coding practices, well-written content, hard work and link popularity site features to be as valuable to site visitors and for search engine ranking. Anything less is a short-term, likely to reduce their classification more often than increases.
So, the long version of the definition would be:
Search Engine Optimization
Using keyword analysis, good coding practices, well-written copy, the analysis of link popularity and site organization careful not to move a web page as close to the number one position in search results as possible for a given key phrase, in the search engines and directories.
Hey, that's not so bad after all. But how to begin? First, separate fact from myth …
SEO Urban Legends
There are very few SEO myths out there. Here are my favorites:
The META tag words matter. Especially wrong. Inktomi pays attention only to the meta tag keywords. You should do something basic, but do not bother to put in keywords that are not compatible with the contents of your page.
Search engines can read Flash, images and video. Forgiveness, and Ford is not selling a flying car, however, either. Search engines can read one thing: text. Anything else, though perfectly legitimate, as a design tool, will not help your ranking. And relying too heavily on Flash and images can reduce the visibility of your site. Google is a partial exception – can read some links in Flash, but still have very limited ability to read Flash content.
Mirroring my site in several places will enhance the ranking. In fact, quite the contrary. The duplication of content in general will have no effect or, worse, reduce your ranking in major search engines. Most search engines now have rules against this form of spam and may reduce the range or ban your site altogether.
"Doorway pages" improve the ranking. The pages have lots of keywords, but then quickly redirect to the main page will not help in the main search engines like Google. And if someone grabs you, and reports to Google or another search engine, you can be banned completely. A landing "or" page bridge, "however, is designed to be as useful to users and search engines, and not redirected to the user, can help provide rich content keywords that are truly worth.
Companies promising to make me rank # 1 in 10,000 for engines search can help $ 99.95. I alternate between bruxism and hysterical laughter when I see these ads. First, no there are 10,000 search engines. In fact, there are probably 10-20 that really should worry about. Getting listed in the other thousand or so is largely a waste of time. Secondly, one can ensure any rank in any search engine for a specific keyword. Period. And finally, the price is less than half the cost to obtain a submission expressed in a single directory (Yahoo). It is likely that anyone trying to make you spend the $ 99.95 is operating a "link farm" where the list of dozens, or hundreds, sites. While it will not hurt your ranking, it will not help, either. For more information about choosing an SEO firm, read the article Google: http://www.google.com/intl/mr/webmasters/seo.html.
Companies charge me more money and guarantee a # 1 ranking on Google can help. This is the latest scam SEO. I can get a number one ranking in Google, too, always and when I come to the keyword selection, or can get their classification under a fairly unique company name. But nobody, and I mean nobody can guarantee rank # 1 in a specific keyword. Even Google says so.
Forget the myths – If an offer sounds too good to be true, it is. The truth is that search engines are almost smart enough to read its pages as a human being, so anything that can scare off a typical site Visiting probably also reduce your ranking. Things that increase your ranking in search engines include:
-
Well content writing
-
Good, clean HTML code
-
Useful, relevant TITLE tags
-
Useful, relevant Description tags
-
Relevant, appropriate links to other websites
There are some basic steps, well executed, it will only increase their page rank of a sea of snake oil.
The process of SEO campaign
A typical campaign SEO begins with an analysis of keywords and then emphasizes ensuring your site does not prevent search engine robots and follow up with continuous connection and traffic analysis. If you like pretty pictures, Here is one:
What is a bot?
A bot is a program used by a search engine to read the contents of your site in a directory. I mentioned briefly in "What is the optimization Search Engine? above. Keeping up now ….
Step 1: Keyword Analysis. Keywords Ah. If you say the word correct often enough on your site, you will get the coveted # 1 spot, right? Wrong. Choosing the right keywords you start making a list of the keywords or phrases that you would like to meet, and usually ends up somewhere completely different. Normally, the selection of the best words key is a four step process:
-
List keywords and phrases that you want to find.
-
See if someone searches on those keywords, and if they find relevant articles.
-
Find out how many other sites are struggling for qualification under those keywords.
-
Pick keywords with the same meaning, but a search ratio of better competition.
Maybe I want to rank # 1 in "Search Engine Optimization. You know what? There are 686,000 other URLs on Google to address this point. Hmmm. But wait! In "Seattle Search Engine Optimization" is just 19,000. So, led that the key phrase in its place. And guess what? We have a rank # 3.
Do not forget to relevance, either. If you want a high ranking on 'wheels', that will take your work for you. And in the end will most likely end up getting found 'wheeled bicycle', 'car tires' 'love handles' and who knows what else. Is it worth it? Sometimes yes, sometimes no. But you have to do your homework to find out.
Data Mining and keywords
If you are doing a campaign for a large site, you may end up testing and comparing of thousands of keywords and phrases. Having a good tool for data mining (even Excel will do), on the one hand is important when doing word analysis key. We use S-Plus by Insightful Software. It saved our lives, and clicker fingers several times.
There are several tools that help you research the number of searches and competitors keywords. Wordtracker (http://www.wordtracker.com) is good – do not depend on the results of Overture, however, unless it is specifically the preparation of an Overture campaign. Metacrawler MetaSpy tool is worth a look, too. Ideally, look at the results of a few different sources.
Keyword Analysis is the most difficult part of a campaign, in terms of number-crunching. It takes a lot work and can not tell you what you want to hear. But in my experience is key to a successful campaign.
Step 2: Preparation of the search engine. Almost all websites are reviewed has one or more problems that prevent bots search engine properly reading the content. Typical Showstoppers include:
-
An all-flash or all images on home page
-
A page that automatically redirects to another page
-
Pop-up ads (does anyone actually reads these things?)
-
A site full of pages with fewer than 400 words on a page
-
Broken Links
-
Navigation that is generated by JavaScript
-
No title or description tags
An important step in any SEO campaign is to ensure that the site will feature the profile friendlier for search engines. Fortunately, the investment in optimizing also will pay off in a more rapid, more universally compatible.
Step 3. Content and site preparation. You've done your research: Do you know the keywords that match your message, and HTML code on your website is a great search engine mat welcome. Now is the time to ensure that your site contains the keywords. This is where people see most often is confused – if rewriting the content of your web highlight the keywords? Yes, but with extreme caution. If small changes are desired and appropriate? Yes Here are my guidelines for the preparation of content.
-
Do not type the keywords (much). This almost always leads to hit, hard to read prose. Writing keyword rich content that actually works for users is an art form. Be careful.
-
Make a careful editing little. If car use the word 'but' auto 'is the key word you need, you probably can make some replacements without breaking your copy carefully.
-
Spending time in the titles and description. Make sure each page of your site has a single title concerned and the description tag.
-
Never use an automatic page generator. Tools such as WebPosition Gold supply to generate optimized pages for you. Do not. They tend to harm your ranking as much as help, and generate ugly, ugly pages.
-
Write more. More content is almost always better. If your site is only missing a keyword or phrase, but I think is important, then your potential customers, probably too. By adding a few more pages, or a white paper, or other content focused on the missing words, it is likely to help visitors and improve your keyword ranking at the same time. And the richest in your site text, the greater the chance that you catch more strange, but sentences very important key that can not be anticipated.
Step 4. Link Analysis. Very few search engines (Google, the most important) of its weight of link popularity "when ranking your site. A more precise term, however, link analysis "Because these engines not only count the number of links to your site. Looking for close ties and contains the relevant text. So a page full of links, one of which happens to be yours, will not help much. However, a link to a related site, near a short paragraph that contains relevant keywords, probably will give a boost. Have keywords in the link is even better. A quick example:
http://www.portentinteractive.com not help much.
For search engine optimization, http://www.portentinteractive.com visit is much better.
For search engine optimization, Portent Interactive go Where is the search engine optimization "is the link to sign the most favorable circumstances.
There are several ways to build your link popularity:
-
Contact sites that are relate to yours and request a link exchange. This works fine, but obviously takes time.
-
Syndicate content. If you can provide an easy way for webmasters interested to directly access relevant news on your website, offer an instant popularity boost links, and your message to boot.
-
Start an affiliate program. If you sell a product, consider creating a program affiliate sales.
Google's' One site, one vote "rule
Google awards weight, much less a link to your site if they link to a page with a bunch of other links. That's why so-called "link farming", not work. Ideally, you want a link to your site from a page that contains relevant content and not many other outgoing links.
Step 5. Submit your site. Many search engines, Google included, allows you to submit your site for free. In general, you can submit your home page and let the search engine crawling the rest of your site. Some engines and directories provide care 'express' service, and some, like Teoma, require you to pay for lodging URL. Engines that you choose depends on your budget and campaign.
Step 6. To review, revise and move on. Is he done? Wrong – the search engine optimization is an ongoing project. At least once a month, check your rankings, traffic reports for your site and the popularity connections and modify your site whenever necessary. The tools needed to measure performance are:
-
Reports Site traffic. Any web hosting company should provide a report of website traffic, and almost all the reporting tools in use today provide a "reference section of search engines. Check out this section for good measure campaign results.
-
The link counts. Use the following link: command in Google (see above) to determine the popularity of your link.
-
Your list keywords. Search the relevant search engines to see if your ranking has improved.
-
Your brain. You have to interpret what they see, and decide whether to make changes. There is no fixed rule for this, and there is no magic formula. Sorry …
So now we will get immediate results, right? Well, not quite …
A word about expectations
Optimization Search engine can take time. Even Google only updates its entire index once a month, so do not expect immediate results.
If your career the first record does not generate increased rankings within a month or two, do not panic. Look at your site traffic and search on the keywords you chose. Sure that the search engine that includes fact checking your site, too – more likely is that robots have not only managed around a 'crawl' place.
Still confused? Find a professional. Of course, cost us money. But it may have lost some of your site that is preventing a good word stop key, and a second set of eyes may help.
A solid marketing strategy
Obviously, Search Engine Optimization is a great job. But nothing can send more traffic to your site, lower cost per click. If you follow the basic steps, and keep at it, you will definitely get results. What is really, really important is making sure not to attach too much weight one step (such as link popularity) at the expense of others. A campaign well rounded deliver strong long-term results.
What about pay per click?
Pay-per-click, as Overture and Google Adwords, are very different animals. If you've done your keyword analysis is halfway, but there are other tasks. I have not spoken of them in this article because, well, you need a separate article. Check back soon …
